Abstract: Questo contributo analizza la posizione e la funzione delle strutture avverbiali di tempo e di luogo nei testi giornalistici italiani contemporanei, considerando i principi della teoria della prospettiva funzionale dell’enunciato. Sulla base dei principi elaborati da Jan Firbas, l’articolo distingue tra avverbiali con funzione tematica (scene) e rematica (specification), analizzandone la distribuzione nelle posizioni iniziale, mediana e finale della frase. L’indagine si fonda su un corpus bilanciato costituito da articoli tratti da due autorevoli quotidiani italiani, Corriere della Sera e la Repubblica, che offrono una varietà di registri e generi testuali. L’analisi qualitativa ed empirica mette in luce una correlazione significativa tra la funzione informativa dell’avverbiale e la sua collocazione sintattica nell’enunciato. In particolare, gli avverbiali tematici presentano una maggiore flessibilità posizionale e ricorrono frequentemente all’inizio della frase, mentre quelli rematici si collocano prevalentemente in posizione finale, contribuendo alla progressione comunicativa. L’articolo sottolinea inoltre l’importanza di fattori pragmatici e interpuntivi che influiscono sulla funzione informativa degli elementi avverbiali, proponendo una riflessione integrata tra sintassi, semantica e struttura dell’enunciato.

Abstract: This contribution analyzes the position and function of temporal and locative adverbial structures in contemporary Italian journalistic texts, considering the theory of Functional Sentence Perspective. Based on Jan Firbas’s framework, the article distinguishes between adverbials with thematic function (scene) and those with rhematic function (specification), analyzing their distribution in initial, medial, and final sentence positions. The study is based on a balanced corpus composed of articles from two leading Italian newspapers, Corriere della Sera and la Repubblica, which offer a variety of textual genres. The qualitative and empirical analysis highlights a significant correlation between the informational function of adverbials and their syntactic placement in the sentence. Thematic adverbials show greater positional flexibility and frequently occur at the beginning of the sentence, while rhematic ones are mostly found in final position, contributing to communicative progression. The article also emphasizes the relevance of pragmatic and punctuation-related factors that influence the informational status of adverbials, proposing an integrated reflection on syntax, semantics, and sentence structure.
